Sox farmhands to play in the Roanoke Valley

Salem, VA (September 19, 2008) — The Salem Avalanche announced today the signing of a two-year Player Development Contract (PDC) with the 2007 World Champion Boston Red Sox. The team will take the field in April 2009 as the Red Sox’ Advanced Class-A affiliate when the club opens its 42nd season of play in the Carolina League.

“This is a historic day for baseball fans in Salem, Roanoke and across Southwest Virginia,” said Salem General Manager, John Katz. “We look forward to bringing Red Sox baseball back to the Roanoke Valley, and continuing the proud tradition of professional baseball in Salem.”

Jones double gives Lynchburg win

Lynchburg, VA—The Salem Avalanche, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Houston Astros, came back to tie the season finale at two in the eighth inning only to have Lynchburg respond with a run to take the victory Monday afternoon at City Stadium. Lynchburg (29-39) got an RBI double from Chris Jones in the decisive inning to drop Salem (26-44).

Four-run inning trumps Salem's big sixth

Lynchburg, VA—The Salem Avalanche, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Houston Astros, watched Lynchburg score four times in the eighth inning Sunday night to outdo the Avalanche 9-7 at City Stadium. Lynchburg (28-39) was aided by three Salem (26-43) errors in the decisive inning.
